A collage wall is like the ultimate mood board that doubles as colorful room decor. It's a fun and inexpensive way to express your personality and decorate your space.

How to Design a Collage Wall

Option 1: If you want to go the old-school route, you can buy a bunch of magazines and cut out pictures and pages that catch your eye. This is a fun way to spend an afternoon, and you can find some really cool images this way.

The downside is that you're limited to whatever magazines you can find at the bookstore. And, it might be hard to make all your images fit the same design, if you are trying to curate a cohesive aesthetic.

Option 2: An easier way to find images is to look online. You can search for photos that inspire you, download the files, and print them later.

With a little searching, you can find lots of collage inspiration on Pinterest and other photo sites. Choose a variety of images with photos, illustrations, quotes, and more. Don't be afraid to mix in some personal photos, too.

Option 3: Skip the extra work and buy a collage kit to hang on your wall. You can find kits in lots of different color palettes and themes.

  • beachy: oceans, waves, palm trees, surfboards
  • peachy: sunflowers, rainbows, fields, wildflowers

Sources for Collage Images

Here are some of my recommended websites to search for wall collage images.

  • Etsy: Etsy has a ton of really great wall collage kits. You can find kits in just about any theme. There are kits that come pre-printed, or digital kits that you can download and print yourself.
  • Pinterest: I've curated a whole board with lots of pink-themed images that you can use as inspiration for your wall collage. Make sure to give me a follow on Pinterest so you can see what else I share.
  • Unsplash: This photo site has lots of images that are free to use. I recommend this site over other sites like Pinterest because you can download larger, high-res photos that will print well.
  • Pexels: Another photo site that offers a selection of free images.

Where to Print the Photos

If you go the DIY route, you'll need a place to get your digital image files printed.

  • Home Printer: To print at home, I recommend using some matte or glossy photo paper with a quality inkjet printer.
  • Pharmacy: Most local drug stores like CVS or Walgreens offer photo printing.
  • Office Supply Stores: Places like Staples offer photo printing as well.

Where to Put a Photo Wall

You can put a photo wall collage just about anywhere. My favorite spots are over a bed, over a desk, or on a large open wall.

Another great place to create a wall collage is around a wall-mounted TV. This makes the TV wall more visually appealing and less of an eye-sore, especially when the TV is off. love putting wall collages on a mounted television wall because it makes it visually appealing and a focal point, especially when the TV is off.

The thumb rule is to hang pictures at eye level. So, if you have a smaller collage, you can try to keep the center of it at eye lever. If you have a large collage, feel free to experiment with the layout that works best for your space.

How to Hang the Photo Prints

You can arrange your images in a neat and tidy grid, or overlap them in a more organic fashion.

Use small loops of blue painter's tape to adhere the backs of the photos to the wall.

For a more decorative look, you can use colorful washi tape to attach the photos to the wall. (Just be sure to test your tape to make sure it doesn't take paint off the wall!)

As a third option, you can try using blue tack to stick the images to the wall. (This is what some dorms and colleges prefer since it's usually paint-safe.)
